GS means German "Geprufte Sicherheit" (Security Certified) and also means "German Safety" (German Security). GS certification is a voluntary certification based on the German Product Safety Law (SGS) and tested according to the EU Unified Standard EN or the German Industrial Standard DIN. It is recognized as a German safety certification mark in the European market.
The GS logo indicates that the use safety of the product has been tested by a credible independent body. GS labeling, although not legally mandatory, does enable manufacturers to be subject to stringent German (European) product safety laws when product failures cause accidents. Therefore, GS logo is a powerful market tool, which can enhance customer confidence and desire to buy. Although GS is a German standard, most European countries agree. In addition to meeting GS certification, products will also meet the CE logo requirements of the European community. Unlike CE, GS logo is not legally mandatory, but because safety awareness has penetrated the general consumer, a GS logo of electrical appliances in the market may be more competitive than the general product.
The GS symbol is Germany's voluntary safety symbol, but it is highly valued by consumers. Many products, including power tools, IT equipment and household appliances, would be difficult to sell in or around Germany without the GS logo.
Product assessment, certification and pre inspection (pre-license) inspection
Product evaluation is based on harmonized European standards with reference to low-voltage, EMC and mechanical instructions. If the products that meet the GS requirements do not have relevant European standards, the certificate of IEC standards will be issued and the validity period of the certificate is five years.
Inspection before pre-license is a necessary condition, followed by annual factory inspection.
In addition to the electrical safety specifications of European harmonization standards and German National Deviations, the product evaluation should be conducted in accordance with ZEK documents and documents prepared by the GS Interpretation Group EK1 (Exchange of Experience Forum 1). Some products need to be examined by ergonomics.
According to ZEK 2001-08, from April 1, 2008, products applying for GS certification must be assessed by PAHs to meet regulatory requirements and to avoid health hazards. This mandatory requirement applies to all materials that may contain PAHs in contact with the human body or placed in the inlet cavity under normal or anticipated reasonable misuse. Products certified by GS before April 1, 2008 will be assessed by March 31, 2009. The revised version of ZEK 01-08 file ZEK 01.1-08 was released and implemented in June 25, 2008. The ergonomic testing required by the German GS logo covers a wide range of information technology products, including LCD/CRT display devices, computers, notebook computers, and other computer peripherals (such as keyboards, mice, printers, scanners, etc.), which are required to comply with the relevant ergonomic specifications of the EK1-ITB 2000 standard.
