Three European textile products safety requirements and test methods released
On August 1, 2018, the European Commission for Standardization issued three new standards: EN 16779-1:2018 for children's bed down quilts, EN 16780:2018 for children's bed bumpers and EN 16781:2018 for children's sleeping bags. The three criteria are as follows:
EN 16779-1:2018 - Safety requirements and test methods for down quilts on children's beds - Part 1: down quilts (excluding down quilts cover)
The draft standard sets out safety requirements for bedding down quilts suitable for children under 36 months, including bedding down quilts with permanent decorative fabrics, i.e. bedding quilts or sheets, but excluding removable down quilts for use in a child's sleep environment (i.e. not in custody), and is intended for sleeping in beds or similar beds. Children in products (such as cribs / cradles) provide enough warmth.
2. EN 16780:2018 -- Safety requirements and test methods for children's bed bumpers
The standard specifies the safety requirements for the child's bed bumper when the child is in a sleeping environment (i.e. not in custody) in a crib or similar product (e.g. a crib/cradle).
3. EN 16781:2018 - Safety requirements and test methods for child sleeping bags used in children's beds.
The standard specifies the safety requirements for children's sleeping bags, which are used in children's sleeping environment (i.e. not in custody), to provide children with sufficient warmth so that they do not need to add bedding when sleeping in cribs or similar products such as cribs/cradles. The standard is applicable to younger children who are not able to climb out of the crib (about 24 months), not to products designed for premature infants, low birth weight infants and outdoor use, nor to products designed to keep children warm in baby trolleys or car seats (such as foot covers).
In addition, if part of these products are designed to provide additional functionality (e.g. game functionality), this part will comply with security requirements related to the relevant standards in addition to those specified in the standards.
